396 Hz tone
A low, warm tone near G — the most comfortable of the solfeggio set to sit with for a long stretch, and the one with the heaviest claims attached.
396 Hz is the third of the nine solfeggio frequencies, close to the note G in standard tuning. Of the set it is the easiest to listen to for a long time: low enough to feel warm, high enough that earbuds reproduce it properly. It is a tone, not a treatment.
The “liberation from fear” label
Every solfeggio tone carries a phrase like this, assigned when the set was assembled in the 20th century. The labels are evocative and they are not measurements: no study has tested 396 Hz against fear, anxiety or guilt, and there is no mechanism by which a particular pitch would act on an emotion while a neighbouring pitch would not.
You can test the neighbouring-pitch point yourself in about ten seconds. Play 396, then drag the carrier to 400, then back. If the number were doing the work, that four-hertz move should matter. It does not.
Why it is a good long-session tone anyway
- It sits in a comfortable range. Low enough to avoid the ear's sensitive band, high enough to survive small speakers.
- It takes a beat well. A 6 Hz theta beat over a 396 Hz carrier is one of the more pleasant combinations on this site — the second preset above.
- It layers. With a pink noise bed underneath it stops being a bare sine and starts being ambience.
If you came here for anxiety
We are not going to tell you a frequency treats anxiety, because it does not. What helps some people on a bad night is a slow, predictable sound and a slower breathing pace — that combination is on the wind-down player, with the same honesty about what it is. If anxiety is a regular problem, the useful step is a clinician, not a tone.
Questions
What is 396 Hz good for?
As a comfortable low drone for meditation or as a carrier for a slow binaural beat. The emotional claims attached to it have no supporting evidence.
Is 396 Hz a real note?
It is close to G4 — in standard tuning at A=440 Hz, G4 is about 392 Hz, so 396 sits slightly sharp of it.
Can I use 396 Hz with headphones or speakers?
Either. It is a single tone, so it needs no channel separation. Headphones are only required for binaural beats.
How long should I listen?
Twenty minutes is a common session. There is no limit here — the timer goes to eight hours and there is no cap on use.
