Can I use one earbud?
Not for binaural beats, and the reason is the same sentence that explains what they are.
No. A binaural beat is built from the difference between two tones, one in each ear — with a single earbud your brain only receives one of them, so there is no difference to reconstruct. You hear a plain tone. Isochronic tones and noise beds work fine with one ear.
What to use instead
If you need one ear free — for a colleague, a child, a doorbell — switch to a form that carries its rhythm in the sound itself:
- Isochronic tones pulse a single tone on and off, so one earbud or a speaker reproduces the rhythm exactly.
- Noise beds need no stereo at all — brown or pink through one ear is the standard open-plan office setup.
- A pure tone is also unaffected; there is no beat to lose.
The same problem in disguise
Three setups fail for the same reason as a single earbud, and all three are common:
