An isochronic tone is a single tone turned on and off at a fixed rate — ten pulses a second for a 10 Hz isochronic tone. Because the rhythm is in the sound itself rather than in the difference between two ears, it survives speakers, a single earbud, a car stereo and a phone on a table. A binaural beat survives none of those.

Why isochronic tones sound more intrusive
Because they are. A binaural beat is a subtle interference pattern; an isochronic tone is a tone being interrupted several times a second, which is exactly the sort of thing the auditory system evolved to notice. Two ways to soften it: drop the carrier towards 100–150 Hz, and put a noise bed underneath so the gaps between pulses are not silent. Both controls are on the player above.
Does the pulse depth matter?
This generator modulates to about 42% depth rather than switching fully off. Full-depth pulsing is fatiguing within minutes and adds a click at every edge; partial depth keeps the rhythm obvious while staying listenable for an hour. That is a design choice, not a measurement — no evidence establishes an optimal depth.

Isochronic tones are usually studied under the same heading as binaural beats: auditory beat stimulation, or brainwave entrainment.
