AirPods, bone conduction and other headphones
The only requirement is two working channels — but several popular designs quietly fail that requirement, and one of them is very popular.
AirPods and ordinary wireless earbuds work fine as long as they stay in stereo. Bone conduction headphones work poorly, because sound conducted through the skull reaches both inner ears and blurs the separation the effect depends on. Open-ear and single earbuds have the same problem to varying degrees.

The AirPods catch
They are fine for listening and not fine during a call. When an app requests the microphone, iOS and Android switch the headset to a low-bandwidth mono profile — audio keeps playing, so nothing looks wrong, and the stereo image is gone. If you have a meeting app open in the background, that may be all that is happening.
Spatial audio and head tracking are a second, smaller issue: processing that moves the image around your head is not what a binaural beat wants. Turn it off for these sessions.
Bone conduction, specifically
These headphones send vibration through the bone to the cochlea, and the skull is a single connected structure — sound put into one side is heard, attenuated, on the other. That crosstalk is exactly what a binaural beat cannot survive cleanly. Some people still report perceiving a beat; treat it as a degraded version rather than the real thing.
If bone conduction is what you own — often for a good reason, like keeping your ears open while running — use isochronic tones instead. The rhythm is in the sound itself and survives any transmission path.
Confirm in ten seconds
Rather than reasoning about your hardware, test it: the headphone check plays left, right, both, an out-of-phase pair and a real 6 Hz beat. If step 4 sounds normal rather than hollow, your channels are being summed somewhere and no binaural beat will reach you.
