Green noise is not a formal engineering term the way white and pink are. In practice it means noise concentrated around the middle of the audible range — roughly 500 Hz — which is where a lot of natural ambience sits. Here it is generated by band-passing pink noise, so you get the mid-band without the high hiss or the low rumble.
What it sounds like
Closer to a river or wind in leaves than to a machine. Because both extremes are rolled off, it tends to feel less synthetic than white noise and less oppressive than brown, which is most of its appeal. It is also the least effective masker of the three, for exactly the same reason: it deliberately leaves the top and bottom of the spectrum uncovered.

Green noise and “nature sounds”
A recorded forest is not green noise: it has birds, gusts, irregular detail and a whole lot of things your attention can catch on. Generated green noise is the smooth version of the same frequency range — no events, nothing to follow, nothing that repeats. If you want ambience you can ignore completely, the synthetic version is easier to ignore than the recording.
