432 Hz is an alternative tuning reference for the note A above middle C, instead of the standard 440 Hz. The gap is roughly 32 cents — about a third of a semitone. Music tuned to 432 Hz is very slightly lower in pitch than the same music at 440 Hz, and that is the whole of the physical difference.

Where the 440 Hz standard came from

Concert pitch drifted for centuries: surviving instruments and tuning forks from the 18th and 19th centuries sit anywhere from roughly 415 to 450 Hz. 440 Hz was adopted as an international reference in the 20th century largely so that orchestras, instrument makers and broadcasters could agree on something. It is a convention, chosen for coordination — not a discovery, and not imposed on the world by anyone in particular.

Listen for yourself, properly

  2. Switch to 440 Hz without changing the volume.
  3. Switch back. Notice how much of the difference you can still hear once you are not being told which is which.

That last step is the interesting part. Comparing two tones you can name is not a blind test, and pitch preference is exactly the kind of judgement that expectation moves. If you prefer 432 Hz after doing this, that is a real preference — enjoy it as one.
