Brainwave Generator

A Gnaural alternative that runs in the browser

Gnaural is the tool serious hobbyists have recommended for twenty years. It still works. It also has not had a stable release since 2011, which is why people look for a successor.

Gnaural is a free, open-source (GPL) desktop binaural beat generator whose stable release is version 1.0.20110606 — June 2011 — with the last project activity on SourceForge in 2022. Its distinguishing feature is scriptable, multi-stage schedules: a session that ramps from one frequency to another over time. That is the part a simple web player does not replace.

What Gnaural still does better

What has changed since 2011

Browsers grew a real audio engine. Everything Gnaural did with a desktop install and a GTK or Java interface now runs in a tab: two oscillators, precise frequency control, noise shaping, sample-accurate timing. That is what this site is — the same synthesis, no download, and it works on the phone in your hand.

Doing a ramp by hand

Until a scheduler exists here, a stepped ramp is straightforward manually — and the wind-down player is exactly that, as three presets: 6 Hz for fifteen minutes, 4 Hz for twenty, then 2 Hz for the night. Press the next preset when you are ready. Less elegant than a curve, but it is the same session.

If you are already comfortable with Gnaural, keep using it. It is free, it works, and it does the one thing this site cannot yet do. A scheduler is on our list.

Questions

Is Gnaural still maintained?

Barely. The stable release dates to 2011 and the last project activity on SourceForge was in 2022. It still runs.

What is the best Gnaural alternative?

For everyday use, a browser generator — including this one — covers the same synthesis with no install. For programmed multi-stage schedules, Gnaural still has the edge.

Can I make a frequency ramp here?

Manually, by switching presets or moving the beat slider mid-session. There is no automated schedule yet.

Is Gnaural safe to download?

It is GPL software hosted on SourceForge. Download from the project page rather than a mirror, as with any old desktop binary.
